  • password protect website/directory tutorial

    What you'll need:
  • Cpanel

  • The Steps

    1. Sign into your websites cpanel.

    2. Scroll down to the "Security" section and click on "Password Protect Directories."

    3. Find the document root you want to be in. I want to be in my website candylace.net's files so I chose that one.

    4. A list of your directories will pop up. Click on the one you want. If you want to lock the entire website than you should see a public_html / yoursitehere directory, or at least I do, but all websites are different so yours may be different.

    5. You should see a "Security Settings" section and a "Create User" section.

    In the security Settings section:
Check the box to password protect the directory.
Where it says enter the name for the protected directory, write the little message you want to pop up when someone visits your website and see's it's locked. For example, I put "changing layout" for mine. Click "Save."

    In the Create User section:
Type in the username and password you want.
Click "Add or Modify The Authorized User" and you're done.
